Bradley J. Johnson, Ph.D. Texas Tech University Department of Animal and Food Sciences [email protected] I.β-Adrenergic Agonist-Stimulated Muscle Hypertrophy One of the most pronounced effects of feeding a β2-adrenergic agonist to ruminants is the preferential increase in skeletal muscle mass and/or cross-sectional area of individual muscles. Examples of these skeletal muscle-enhancing characteristics are summarized in Table 1. Generally, addition of either clenbuterol or cimaterol, both presumed β2-adrenergic agonists, to ruminants resulted in increased longissimus muscle cross-sectional area between 11 and 39 %. In addition, the mass of selected muscles were increased between 8 and 40 %. These data suggested that addition of these β2-adrenergic agonists to ruminants resulted in dramatic increased muscle mass.

SUMMARY The foliowing cardiac effects may be attributed to thyroxin: 1-Thyroxin augments all anaerobic processes in the body includ::ng the heart, and decreases the glycogen content of the heart ( 1, 2, 5, 27). The resistance of the heart to anoxia is increased in hyperthyroidism ( 25). 2- Thyroxin influences the cardiac weight and prevents cardiac atrophy (3, 8, 10, 11, 19, 20, 21, 30...

Propranolol is a nonselective beta-adrenergic receptor blocking agent possessing no other autonomic nervous system activity. It specifically competes with beta-adrenergic receptor agonist agents for available receptor sites. When access to beta-receptor sites is blocked by propranolol, the chronotropic, inotropic, and vasodilator responses to beta-adrenergic stimulation are decreased proportion...

beta-Adrenergic stimulation induced delayed afterdepolarizations and triggered activity in atrial fibers of adult but not young canine coronary sinus. However, sensitivity to beta-adrenergic agonists with respect to maximum diastolic potential was identical at both ages, and delayed afterdepolarizations and triggered activity did occur in response to ouabain. Age-dependent lengthening of the ac...
